ECOLOGICALLY CLEAN AND EFFECTIVE SORBENTS FOR PETROLEUM AND IT'S DERRIVATIVES

Every year mankind spends billions of dollars to eliminate the consequences of oil and oil products spill in order to preclude irreversible processes in the biosphere of our planet. Such incidents particularly in water areas cause irreversible aftermath and grave damages because the flora and the fauna suffer from inevitable and irreparable consequences of the pollution, sea costs become oil-polluted and the touristic infrastructure bears huge losses. In this case using sorbent agents absorbing hydrocarbonic water and soil pollutant is vital and most effective technological measure.

 

Sorbent  made by ZNP plant is a high-performance ecologically pure agent produced from natural raw material – peat. Sorbent  is able to absorb rapidly hydrocarbonic pollutant and has high technological effectiveness owing to its unique specifications – highly dispersed structure and high apparent density (400-450 g/cm³). As of effectiveness of use on water surfaces this sorbent has no analogue in the world. Sorbent  solves wide range of environmental problems – absorption of oil and oil products spill, buffer area creation near seacoast, removing thin (iridescent) hydrocarbonic films from water surface, shoreline restoration, water surface cleaning in sea and river ports, rocks surfaces, piers and breakwaters clearance.

 Sorbents Designation and Scope of Use:

- rapid absorption and fixation of crude oil, oils, mazut and other liquid nonpolar organic hydrocarbonic contaminants both from water and ground surfaces;
- creation of buffer (protective) zone near sea coasts, breakwater, beaches, aiming at precluding their contamination with oil products, discharged near the coasts;
- cleaning contaminated surface of piers, rock surface, breakwater, reservoirs, greased production facilities, and also removing nonpolar hydrocarbons from other surfaces;
- removing thin (iridescent) hydrocarbonic films from water surface;
- reacting against the washing-off of oil products by surface waters while eliminating the consequences of fuel oil pipeline and wellsite accidents;
- accelerated remediation of territories contaminated with oil products, because sorbents are soil ameliorators and soil improver;
- immobilization (binding) of oil products in the disposal areas of sludge depositories, process pads, junkyards and so on, aiming at precluding oil products from getting into underground waters.

3.1 The sorbents are applied polluted surface by hand or with any mechanical means which guarantees even spreading.

Properties of Sorbents:

- non-toxic, exceptionally natural materials, made on basis of peat according to a special reagentless technology. They are various dispersion powders of dark-brown color (particle size 10-2000 mkm), packed density 300-400 g/cm3;

- sterile, do not contain pathogenic germs, are explosion-proof. Are similar to peat as far as fire risk is concerned (self-ignition temperature – 180º С);

- do not cause ecological disturbance in ecosystems, do not have detrimental effect on biotypes of various trophic level, do not lead to mutagenesis on a genetic level in biosphere objects. Are authorized by sanitary bodies to be applied as natural substances that do not require hygiene rating;

- do not have detrimental effect on the environment, because oil and other hydrocarbons, absorbed by sorbents, are fully retained by them, that allows to utilize used sorbents safely, and depuration of environment objects from oil products is going on naturally and is a complete environmentally friendly process;

- are water repellent, do not get wet or dissolve in water. They spread quickly on a water surface, and in contact with oil serve as a barrier, narrowing contamination zones and absorbing oil irreversibly, preclude contaminant from spreading both in breadth and depth;

- no less than 24–25 days flotation ability guarantees collection of the used sorbent by physical methods. In case of sedimentation, oil absorbed by a sorbent poses no threat, as is encapsulated inside the sorbent particles, where it incurs gradual biodeterioration;

- are efficient within the wide temperature range from -20º С to +100º С;

- sorption velocity of oil products: stock-tank oil of medium viscosity at +20º С is 15–30 sec, gasoline and thin (iridescent) hydrocarbonic films from water surface – 1–2 sec, engine oil – 5–8 sec. Oil absorption time at freezing temperatures increases up to 1–2 min. Absorbing capacity on stock-tank oil of medium viscosity is 1–2,5 g/g (depends on contaminant’s properties, temperature);

- simplicity and great variance of used sorbent’s utilization means are due to the usage of natural law-ash raw material, low in mineral.

Sorbent efficiency within the wide temperature range from -20°С to +100°С.

According to GOST 12.1.007 sorbent is regarded a low-hazard material, i.e. a 4th-class-of-hazard material, is flame- and blast-proof.

Sorbent expiry date – is not limited.

Products are released in plastic or polypropylene bags of 20 kg net weight. At customer’s will sorbents can be packed into big bags with plastic pads, of 400-500 kg net weight.

These are peat sorbents and they have the following advantages:

-    rapid absorption of organic contaminants owing to their structure;
-    high coverage velocity of contaminant’s stain;
-    ability to remove thin (iridescent) films from water surfaces;
-    localization and elimination of oil outflow on water surfaces without slick bar using;
-    absence of desorption;
-    maintainability of use, owing to sorbent’s rheology as disperse material;
-    possibility of use both on land and on water;
-    versatility of organic contaminants’ absorption;
-    sorbent’s nonabrasiveness.

Our sorbents’ Application Technology

The list of common standard equipment for execution of work:
-    carriage hoses of dry powder fire extinguishing installations.
-    truck for carrying cement, raw material, equipped with compressed-air-system of loading and unloading loose materials;
-    sandblaster;
-    RAS (RS-1) type portable autonomous sorbent pulverizer;
-    scrubber, lifting bail and so on.

-    self-propelled platform with motor vehicle chassis on wheels or on tracks;

Sorbents’ Application Technology
On water surface.
Equipment loaded with sorbent is installed on the upper deck of a floating platform. Contaminated water surface is treated with sorbent’s air blast (via uniform coverage of contaminated fields with sorbent) in the mode of by-stages material (sorbent) unloading from the car without slick bar using. Unavailable fields of contaminated surface are treated with sorbent using helicopter via dropping sorbent in plastic bags (filled by 50% of bag size) from the height no less than 100-200 m.
In windy weather the sorbent could be dispersed downwind. After conglomerate formation (oil or oil products absorption) the conglomerate could be removed by all means of mechanical methods using elevators, scrubbers etc. Sorbents high buoyancy allows to collect the conglomerate during 25 days after sorbent dispersing.
In order to decontaminate watercourse surface slick bars should be used for oil outflow localization.
On ground surface.
Equipment loaded with sorbent is installed on mobile tracklayer-mounted or wheel-mounted loader. Application technology on ground surface is similar to the water surface.
On a hard, impermeable contaminated surface sorbent sieving is carried out in a similar way, and conglomerate is eliminated at a slight surplus of sorbent in order to prevent adhesion to brushes and scoops.
SoNeT sorbents do not have any analogues in efficiency of application for cleaning surfaces (production equipment, piers, rocks, breakwaters, reservoirs, greased facilities and so on). Because owing to their structure and physicochemical properties they possess unique properties, providing sorbents with high activity of their particles to adhesion on contaminated surface and «powerful» immobilization of contaminant inside the material’s capillary structure. To achieve effect sorbents are mixed with sand in proportion sorbent: sand - 1:10 (depending on type and properties of contaminant on the surface). The given mixture is loaded into the sandblaster and the surface is treated with an air blast of sorbent’s and sand’s mixture.

Storage

 Sorbents maintain their properties infinitely long in dry facilities enclosed against weather and direct sun, packed in plant undamaged containers. Used sorbents are stored in metal, or polymeric barrels (containers), covered with lids till their utilization. Containers with used sorbents are allowed to be placed both in the open air and in air-conditioned facilities, away from working equipment.


Utilization of sorbents and conglomerate – sorbent-oil condensate:

-    by combustion, aiming at receiving thermal energy on working power stations without their reequipment;
-    as a plastifying component while producing road surfaces;
-    as a component for producing impervious screens;
-    by dumping;
-    by processing in factories, utilizing household waste (possible with preliminary extraction of oil products) and subsequent combustion or soil application of sorbent.

These sorbents are ecologically friendly and rather cheap.
